Daily Insight January 7
“Therefore, rid yourselves of all malice and all deceit, hypocrisy, envy, and slander of every kind. Like newborn babies, crave pure spiritual milk, so that by it you may grow up in your salvation, now that you have tasted that the Lord is good.” 1 Peter 2:1-3
It is a New Year. A perfect time for implementing changes in our lives. When we change inside of us, then it produces changed lives around us.
It all starts with you. To make changes is not easy. However, it is possible with a firm decision, determined mindset and of course divine help.
Good change is easier for a Christian. The reason is this -a Christian who accepted Christ as his or her savior and Lord is already born again into God’s family. They are born again not by a perishable seed, but by the seed that is imperishable, by the living and eternal Word of God. The Word of God was preached to them, and they accepted it. The moment they opened the door of their heart for Jesus Christ, God gave them His Holy Spirit to indwell in them. Before this happened, they had only one mechanism, which is flesh. Now they have divine help inside, who is the Holy Spirit to make the change happen. Therefore change is possible.
Our today’s Bible insight says, “Therefore, rid yourselves of all malice and all deceit, hypocrisy, envy, and slander of every kind. Like newborn babies, crave pure spiritual milk, so that by it you may grow up in your salvation, now that you have tasted that the Lord is good.”
One negative and one positive command is given in our today’s insight. Negatively, get rid of the old clothes of malice, deceit, hypocrisy, envy, and slander of every kind. Remove these old clothes which are old habits before you were born again by the hearing and accepting of the Word.
Positively, like newborn babies, crave pure spiritual milk. The last verses of the first chapter suggest what the author meant by spiritual milk is the Word of God, which is the Bible.
I have a newborn girl, a bundle of joy, just born a week ago. She craves for mom’s milk every 2-3 hours. Why? She needs milk to grow physically. Like the newborn craves for milk, beloved, you crave for pure spiritual milk (the Word of God). Why? You need to grow spiritually because of your new birth into God’s family. We grow in the knowledge of God’s will and mature and develop in wisdom by feeding on the Word of God. It is pure and unadulterated. It will equip you. It will guide you. It will counsel you. It will empower you. Moreover, the Word of God, the Bible, promises benefits for this life and for the life to come.
Psalm 34:8 says, “Taste and see that the Lord is good”. The author says to the newborn believer, you have already tasted that the Lord is good, haven’t you? You are already saved and rescued by God. Now for your progressive spiritual growth, both removal of old habits and the craving and learning of the Bible is vital.
